In short, do not expect the immediacy and indulgence that could be presaged by the artistic direction: under the almost toy-like setting hides a demanding and profound racing game, which immediately requires a certain commitment.

Just think of the fact that the numerous cars present in the game (which unfortunately do not have a license but which faithfully remember their real counterparts) all have different behaviors on the various funds, and that these behaviors are calibrated so as to remember the real driving feeling.
Let me be clear, Art of Rally is not only this, it is also a surprisingly credible rally video game with an absolutely level simulation setting, although it has its roots in the arcade world. This leads to almost total immersion, and often one finds oneself almost mesmerized by the experience. We are co-pilots of ourselves, so that the dreamy atmosphere of the game is not disturbed by the directions of the navigator. They must be foreseen by eye thanks also to the visual setting, which abandons the more classic of the chase-cams positioned behind the car to adopt a much higher point of view than usual that brings the eye to the horizon. His meditative approach to drifting is given by the fact that he is really alone inside the courses: in Art of Rally there are no co-drivers, the curves It is also for this reason, as well as by virtue of its low-poly aesthetic, that Art of Rally is, net of a pounding synthwave soundtrack, such a relaxing video game. In Art of Rally there is no death, there are only cars, speed, jumps, curves and the audience in raptures on the side of the road.

Starting from the original competitions with the cars of Group 2, passing through Group 4, the gravel-hungry beasts of Group B and the crazy prototypes of Group S, Art of Rally traces the various eras of the discipline, crossing a series of wonderful landscapes in which everything exists as a function of racing and in which the only humans are represented by small anthropomorphic sticks crowded along the roadside. Forget about the dangerĪrt of Rally is set in the wet dreams of fans, in an idyllic world where death and danger do not exist and Rally is a pure and simple art form through which to paint frescoes on the gravel with the wheels. Almost a year after its first release, the work done by Dune Casu and Funselektor in this sense is still astounding today, even in what is today the unequivocally worse version of the game. The wonder of Art of Rally lies precisely in the fact that it has managed to to tell that historical period with a truly astounding fidelity, however, placing it within a different atmosphere.Īrt of Rally succeeds in the very complicated task of narrating a sport whose champions needed to confront a team of piscologists between one stage and another, so extreme was the trauma of driving under certain conditions, and transforming it into a ‘ meditative experience. There was a not too distant time when those supercharged racing cars fired like bullets in the midst of clouds of dust or on completely frozen mountain passes attracted ocean crowds who would have done anything to see that chaos live and touch it with hand, often risking his life just to get even a few inches closer to those tangles of steel and gasoline. Rallying has always been pure chaos, but characterized by impressive elegance. The fact is that rallying is perhaps the purest motorsport that has ever existed a ruthless, insane and apparently senseless competition in which the driver, co-driver and car become one as they whiz at terrifying speeds on narrow mountain roads risking death at every corner. It is therefore a real shame that Art of Rally on Nintendo Switch presented itself as such a poor quality port. Since the launch day, fans have been asking for a transposition on home consoles and when Funselektor has finally satisfied the requests, an atmosphere of sincere curiosity has been generated around the product.Īrt of Rally on Switch was also one of my forbidden dreams (for the writer it is the absolute GOTY of 2020), especially given the summer launch window that would have coincided hours of relaxation on the beach with furious drifting on the dusty roads of Sardinia or on the hot asphalt of virtual Japan imagined by Dune Casu. A great little masterpiece able to pay homage at the same time to the evolution of the discipline and to the video games that have marked its history, while managing to decline everything in a totally innovative and highly impactful formula.
At the time of its publication on Steam, Art of Rally it represented one of the high points reached by modern arcade racing.
